At Vida Vida we want to set the standards in online product personalisation and we are constantly thinking of new ways we can make our personalised leather goods unique. We’ve been personalising our products for 7 years now and we try to be innovative and creative in both the design of our products and the way in which we can personalise them.

Our most recent challenge has been to create personalised leather products that are beautiful in themselves but that also carry an emotional warmth as a result of the personalisation.

Our personalised products are often bought as gifts, which means that there’s that connection between buyer and receiver – usually family or close friends that love each other. We’ve got 2 young boys – Herbie and Reggie. When either one draws us a picture or writes us a little note it’s always a lovely feeling. That feeling is what we wanted people to experience when they received one of our laser personalised products.

We started to look into ways of recreating exact replicas of drawings and handwritten messages onto leather. We bought a tattoo gun which didn’t work quite as well on leather as we’d imagined (and also a very dangerous thing to have around). 

So then we looked into laser engravers. You can buy them for £80 and you can buy them for £25,000. We didn’t know where to start but, after much deliberation, we decided on one that could do such fine detail laser engraving that it could engrave a perfect photographic image onto leather. The cost was considerable!

After an experimental start we now love our new laser engraver – we’ve learnt so much of just what it can do. We’re obsessed about the search for new fonts, novel ideas and actually designing new products that have an area that suits laser engraving. Kid’s drawings and handwritten messages are a doddle for us to engrave now and really hit that emotional button when the receiver realises that their child has drawn something special just for them and they can now keep it forever.
